Contra Costa County will follow state recommendations, which advise shorter isolation and quarantine periods for anyone infected with or exposed to COVID-19, as of January 6th.
According to state guidelines, anyone who tests positive for COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status, can cease their isolation stay after five days if they later test negative and have no symptoms or their symptoms are improving. The test must be performed on or after the fifth day of isolation. Previously, positive cases were isolated for 10 days.
Under some conditions, quarantine durations for people who have been exposed to COVID-19 have been reduced to five days. For unvaccinated people and those who are not up to date on their COVID vaccinations (eligible for a booster but haven't obtained one), quarantine can end after day 5 with a negative test.
People who have had a booster shot or are up to date on their COVID vaccinations—that is, they are fully vaccinated but are not yet eligible for a booster—do not need to quarantine following exposure. To be safe, they should be evaluated 5 days following exposure. Read the press release here.
